Tie Dye;   Textile Dyeing Around the World
Week One  Shibori:  This a traditional form of Japanese textile dyeing. While there are several different techniques of Shibori, we will focus on Arashi Shibori which involves wrapping fabric around a cylinder and scrunching the fabric down before dyeing it. The result is looks something like an “arashi”, the Japanese word for storm.
Week Two  Bandhani:  In India, Bandhani is a tradition of tie dye that involves tying small knots into fabric. We will do this and use the traditional colors of yellow, red, green and black to create a beautiful final product.
Week Three  Tritik:  This is a type of textile work often found in various countries of Africa. The technique involves drawing a design on cloth and then stitching with a thick thread over the design before dyeing.
Time permitting; we will also do some “American” Tie Dyeing.   Everyone has seen the tie dye swirl on shirts and this is your opportunity to learn how to make one! This technique as well as others will be discussed and participants will have an opportunity to choose their own colors
